Home blood pressure monitoring instructions
Home readings can help your care team see blood pressure patterns outside the clinic. Good technique matters. A wrong cuff size, talking, or unsupported posture can change the reading.
Do not change medication on your own
Share your readings with your prescriber or care team. Do not start, stop, or change a blood pressure medication unless they tell you to.
Choosing and checking a monitor
- Use an upper-arm monitor when possible and choose a cuff that fits your arm.
- Ask a pharmacist or care team member to help check cuff size if you are unsure.
- Use a monitor sold for use in Canada and look for devices recommended by Hypertension Canada when possible.
- Bring the monitor to a health visit from time to time so the readings can be compared with clinic equipment.
Taking a reading
- 1Avoid exercise, caffeine, nicotine, and large meals shortly before checking unless your care team gives different instructions.
- 2Empty your bladder first.
- 3Sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and arm supported at heart level.
- 4Rest quietly before the first reading. Do not talk during the reading.
- 5Take two readings about 1 minute apart.
- 6Record both readings, the date, the time, and any notes your care team asked you to track.
