A pessary is a soft silicone device placed in the vagina to support pelvic organs or reduce stress urinary incontinence. For many, it's an effective non-surgical option. We don't fit or supply pessaries — see the referral below — but here's the landscape so you know what to ask about.

The everyday pessary — most common, easy to insert and remove yourself.
Stage 1 or 2 pelvic organ prolapse, stress incontinence, or both. Most patients can manage insertion, removal, and cleaning at home once sized properly.
Remove and clean 1 to 2 times per week, or per your doctor's instructions. Follow-up in clinic every 3 to 6 months at first.

For stage 3 prolapse when a ring doesn't hold.
More advanced prolapse where the cervix sits at or beyond the vaginal opening. Harder to remove yourself — usually changed and cleaned at your gynecologist's office.
Removed and cleaned by clinician every 2 to 3 months. Topical estrogen is often prescribed alongside to protect the vaginal wall.

Larger-volume pessaries for significant prolapse or unusual anatomy.
Cases where a ring or Gellhorn doesn't fit or doesn't hold. Cubes are used in very specific situations and need to be removed nightly.
Cubes removed nightly to avoid adherence. Donuts changed at your gynecologist's office.
How fitting works: The initial fitting is done by a clinician — a gynecologist, family doctor trained in pessary fitting, or a pelvic floor physiotherapist. It usually takes a few tries to find the right size and shape. For the pessary itself, lubricants, cleaning supplies, and ongoing care, we refer you to Munroe Pharmacy at St. Boniface Hospital — see the next section.
We don't carry pessaries or do pessary fittings. For supplies and ongoing care, our neighbours across the street handle that — directly inside St. Boniface Hospital.
Four things we wish every patient heard before their first gyne appointment. Questions? Come in or call us.
Evidence is strong that pelvic floor physiotherapy reduces urinary incontinence and prolapse symptoms in many patients — often as much as surgery for stage 1 to 2 prolapse. We can refer you to a local pelvic floor physio.
Vaginal dryness, urinary leaking, and painful sex after menopause are common but not something you have to live with. Topical estrogens, moisturizers, pessaries, and pelvic floor training all help — often in combination.
Topical vaginal estrogens deliver a very small local dose — much less than systemic hormone therapy. For many people they can be used long-term. Available by prescription only — talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner.
Pain, bleeding, unusual discharge, sudden changes in urinary function, or a pessary that has fallen out warrants a visit. Our pharmacists will help you decide whether it's something we can address at the counter or whether you need to see your doctor.
