PB2 Peanut Protein Capsules Patient Instructions

PB2 peanut protein capsules may be compounded when an allergist prescribes a measured peanut oral immunotherapy dose. These instructions support the allergy clinic plan; they do not replace the clinic dosing calendar or emergency action plan. Available by prescription only.

Dose timing matters

Daily dosing, missed-dose rules, and dose increases should follow the allergy clinic schedule.

Give with food

Food and consistent timing can reduce dosing problems. Follow the food instructions from your allergy clinic.

Avoid reaction triggers

Illness, exercise, overheating, and asthma symptoms can change reaction risk. Ask the clinic what to do before giving the dose.

Daily Dose Routine

  1. 1Use the strength and number of capsules written on the label. Do not change strengths or combine old and new capsules unless the allergy clinic tells you to.
  2. 2Give the dose with food, at about the same time each day, according to the allergy clinic plan.
  3. 3If the capsule is opened and mixed into food, use the small amount of food your care team recommended and make sure the full amount is taken.
  4. 4Watch for symptoms after the dose for the amount of time recommended by the allergy clinic.
  5. 5Keep the emergency action plan and epinephrine auto-injector available whenever a dose is given.

Do Not Give the Dose Until You Ask

  • The patient is sick with fever, vomiting, worsening cough, or an asthma flare.
  • The patient has been exercising, is overheated, or is about to exercise, take a hot bath, or shower.
  • A dose was missed and the allergy clinic has not told you how to restart.
  • The patient has symptoms that could be an allergic reaction before the dose is given.
  • The label, capsule strength, clinic schedule, or dosing calendar do not match.

Use the Emergency Plan

Follow the allergy action plan for symptoms after a dose. Use epinephrine and call emergency services if the plan tells you to.

  • Trouble breathing, wheezing, throat tightness, voice change, or repetitive coughing.
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, throat, face, or eyes.
  • Hives with vomiting, belly pain, dizziness, faintness, or sudden tiredness.
  • Any symptom pattern your allergy action plan says should be treated with epinephrine.

What to Confirm at Refill

  • Current dose strength and number of capsules.
  • Whether the patient is in escalation, hold, or maintenance dosing.
  • Food vehicle instructions if capsules are opened.
  • Missed-dose restart rules.
  • Emergency action plan and epinephrine auto-injector status.
