Rectal Rockets Patient Instructions

These instructions are for compounded rectal rocket suppositories prepared for rectal use. The prescription label and prescriber directions should guide the dose, timing, storage, and treatment length. Available by prescription only.

Rectal use only

Rectal rockets are not taken by mouth and are not used vaginally. Ask before using if the route is unclear.

Shape matters

The tapered end is inserted first. The wider base may be intended to keep part of the medication near the external rectal area.

Storage varies

Some compounded suppositories soften at room temperature or need refrigeration. Follow the label.

Before Use

  1. 1Read the prescription label and confirm the route, dose, schedule, and storage instructions.
  2. 2Wash your hands before handling the suppository.
  3. 3Use the suppository at the time written on the prescription label.
  4. 4Do not use during pregnancy unless the prescriber has specifically reviewed the formula and told you to use it.

Insertion Steps

  1. 1Try to empty your bowels first, if possible.
  2. 2If the suppository feels soft, leave it wrapped and chill it briefly before opening.
  3. 3Remove one suppository from the package.
  4. 4Lie on your side or use the position recommended by your care team.
  5. 5Insert the tapered end gently into the rectum as directed.
  6. 6Remain lying down for the time recommended on the label or by your care team.
  7. 7Wash your hands after insertion.

Storage and Missed Doses

Follow the storage directions on the label. If a suppository softens, chill it in the wrapper before opening. Keep it away from heat, children, and pets.

If you miss a dose, use it when you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double doses unless your prescriber gives that direction.

When to Call

  • Bleeding, worsening pain, severe burning, or new swelling occurs.
  • You feel faint, dizzy, unusually weak, or develop a severe headache.
  • The suppository is too soft to handle even after chilling.
  • The directions, route, or treatment length are unclear.
  • Pregnancy is possible or pregnancy status has changed.

Practical Notes

Some base may leak after insertion. A liner or protective undergarment may be useful. Do not share this prescription, and do not use leftover doses for a new flare unless the prescriber tells you to restart.
