Spacer and inhaler chamber instructions

A spacer or valved holding chamber can make it easier to use a metered-dose inhaler. These steps are general. Your inhaler, spacer, label, and care plan may give more specific directions.

Bring it in

If the device whistles, leaks around the mouthpiece or mask, or feels hard to use, bring the inhaler and spacer to the pharmacy so we can review the technique with you.

How to use it

  1. 1Remove the caps from the inhaler and spacer. Check that both openings are clean.
  2. 2Shake the inhaler well. Prime it if the package insert says to prime it.
  3. 3Insert the inhaler mouthpiece into the spacer.
  4. 4Breathe out away from the spacer.
  5. 5Place the spacer mouthpiece between your teeth and seal your lips around it, or place the mask firmly over the nose and mouth.
  6. 6Press the inhaler once. Breathe in slowly and deeply through the spacer.
  7. 7Hold your breath for about 5 to 10 seconds if you can, then breathe out slowly.
  8. 8Wait before a second puff if your label or inhaler instructions tell you to wait.

Cleaning and storage

  • Follow the cleaning instructions that came with your spacer.
  • Many spacers are washed in warm water with mild dish soap, then left to air dry.
  • Do not dry the inside with a towel unless the product instructions say to do so.
  • Keep the spacer clean, dry, and free of small objects or residue.
