Vaginal Suppository Patient Instructions

These general instructions are for prescribed vaginal suppositories prepared by the pharmacy. Use the product name, dose, schedule, and storage directions printed on your own label. Available by prescription only when prescribed ingredients are used.

Vaginal use only

Do not swallow, use rectally, or share this prescription. Route matters.

Leakage can happen

Some melted base may leak after insertion. A liner can help protect clothing.

Storage varies

Some suppositories need refrigeration and some do not. Follow the label for your preparation.

Before Use

  1. 1Read the prescription label and confirm the product name, route, dose, schedule, and storage instructions.
  2. 2Confirm whether the prescriber wants bedtime use, a specific cycle day, or a specific treatment length.
  3. 3Wash your hands before handling the suppository.
  4. 4Do not take a vaginal suppository by mouth.

Insertion Steps

  1. 1Remove one suppository from the package.
  2. 2If it feels soft, leave it wrapped and chill it briefly before opening.
  3. 3Lie down or use the position recommended by your care team.
  4. 4Insert the suppository gently into the vagina as directed on the label.
  5. 5Remain lying down for a few minutes if that helps reduce leakage.
  6. 6Wash your hands after insertion.

Storage and Missed Doses

Follow the storage instructions on your pharmacy label. Keep suppositories away from heat, children, and pets.

If you miss a dose, use it when you remember unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Do not double up unless the label or prescriber tells you to.

Check the beyond-use date before each course and ask before using leftover medication for a new symptom episode.

When to Call

  • You are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or pregnancy status changes.
  • You have worsening irritation, new pain, bleeding, rash, or swelling.
  • Symptoms are not improving by the end of the prescribed course.
  • The dose, route, timing, storage, or treatment length is unclear.
  • The suppository melted, changed appearance, or was stored outside the label directions.
