Mirtazapine

Antidepressant often chosen when sleep or appetite are affected

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant that often improves sleep and appetite as part of its action. It is taken at bedtime. Strengths are 15 mg, 30 mg, and 45 mg.

How the pharmacy helps

We dispense regular tablets and the orally disintegrating tablet (ODT, dissolves on the tongue). Patients who have trouble swallowing pills sometimes prefer the ODT.

At lower doses, the sedating effect is stronger. Higher doses can be slightly less sedating for some patients.
Increased appetite is common. Mention any unwanted weight change at follow-up.
Most patients take it 30 minutes before bed. Earlier may make daytime grogginess worse.
