Zopiclone

Non-benzodiazepine sleep medication

Zopiclone (Imovane) is a Z-drug used short-term for sleep. It works on similar receptors to benzodiazepines. Best used for short courses; tolerance can develop with regular nightly use.

How the pharmacy helps

We dispense 5 mg and 7.5 mg tablets. Many patients do well on 3.75 mg or split tablets — talk to the pharmacist about pill cutters if needed.

A bitter or metallic taste in the mouth the next morning is a known side effect. It usually does not need treatment.
Tolerance and dependence can still happen, especially with nightly long-term use. Short courses are the goal.
Adding alcohol increases sedation and risk of complex sleep behaviours. Avoid combining.
