What is Vaginal Atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy (atrophic vaginitis) is a condition involving thinning, drying, and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to reduced estrogen levels. It most commonly affects postmenopausal women but can also occur in pre-menopausal women.

Studies report vaginal dryness prevalence of 27–55% and painful intercourse (dyspareunia) of 32–41% in postmenopausal women. Urinary tract infections in this group range from 4–15%.

Available Concentrations

We compound estriol vaginal cream in several concentrations:

  • 0.05% (0.5 mg/g) — the lowest concentration, often used for maintenance
  • 0.1% (1 mg/g) — the most commonly prescribed concentration
  • 0.2% (2 mg/g) — a higher concentration for more severe symptoms

Your prescriber selects the concentration and usage frequency based on your symptoms and response to treatment. All concentrations are compounded in VersaBase — a pharmaceutical-grade base designed for effective vaginal medication delivery.

Symptoms Treated

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Vaginal burning or itching
  • Urinary urgency and frequency
  • Vaginal discharge
  • General vulvovaginal discomfort

How Does it Work?

Estriol is a bioidentical estrogen hormone — it is chemically identical to the estrogen naturally produced by the body. Applied vaginally, estriol is delivered directly to the tissues where it is needed, helping to restore the vulvovaginal lining.

Estriol is considered the mildest of the three estrogens (estrone, estradiol, estriol). Because it acts locally rather than systemically, it provides targeted relief without the broader hormonal effects of systemic estrogen therapy.

How to Use

  1. Wash hands before and after application
  2. Fill the applicator syringe to the prescribed mark, or apply the prescribed amount of cream
  3. Insert the applicator gently into the vagina and deposit the cream
  4. Apply at bedtime — lying down after application helps the cream stay in contact with the vaginal tissue
  5. Wear a panty liner if needed, as some cream may be discharged

A common starting schedule is once daily at bedtime for 2 weeks, then 2–3 times per week for maintenance. Your prescriber will provide your specific schedule.

Storage

  • Store at room temperature
  • Avoid extreme heat and direct sunlight
  • Keep the tube or jar tightly closed when not in use
  • Check the beyond-use date on the label
