Nebulizer cleaning instructions

Nebulizer parts need regular cleaning so medicine can move through the device and the parts stay ready for the next dose. These steps are general. Follow the instructions that came with your own nebulizer.

Keep water out of the compressor

The compressor and tubing are not washed like the medicine cup. Do not place the compressor or tubing under water unless the device manual specifically says to do so.

After each use

  • Wash your hands before handling the nebulizer parts.
  • Take apart the mouthpiece or mask and the medicine cup as directed by the device instructions.
  • Rinse the mouthpiece or mask and medicine cup with warm water unless the manufacturer gives different directions.
  • Shake off extra water and place the parts on a clean surface to air dry.
  • Store dry parts in a clean, dry place.

Deeper cleaning and replacement

  • Follow the manufacturer instructions for disinfecting the mouthpiece or mask and medicine cup.
  • Some instructions use a vinegar and water soak; others use a different disinfecting method.
  • Do not submerge the compressor or tubing in water.
  • Wipe the outside of the compressor and tubing if needed, then let surfaces dry.
  • Replace filters, tubing, masks, cups, or mouthpieces on the schedule recommended for the device.
