Methotrexate

DMARD for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and other autoimmune conditions

Methotrexate is used in rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain cancers. Critical: it is taken ONCE A WEEK, not daily — daily dosing has caused fatal errors. Folic acid supplementation reduces side effects. Periodic blood work for liver, kidneys, and blood counts.

How the pharmacy helps

We dispense 2.5 mg tablets and the subcutaneous pen. The pharmacist sets a "methotrexate day" with patients to anchor the weekly schedule.

Access framing

Available by prescription only. Always confirm WEEKLY dosing — never daily.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions
Methotrexate Questions

Yes — once a week, not daily. Same day each week. The pharmacist will mark this clearly on the bottle.
Methotrexate blocks folate. Daily folic acid (often 1 mg) reduces mouth sores, GI upset, and hair thinning without blocking the medication.
Methotrexate causes severe birth defects. Effective contraception and a 3+ month gap before trying to conceive (men and women) are needed.
Avoid or strictly limit. Combination raises liver risk.
