Anticonvulsant — also used in bipolar and migraine prevention

Valproic acid (Depakene) and the related divalproex (Epival) are used in epilepsy, bipolar disorder, and migraine prevention. Periodic blood work for liver function and platelets.

Valproate carries a high risk of birth defects and developmental problems. It is generally avoided in people who can become pregnant unless no alternative.
