What are Acetic Acid Hydrocortisone Ear Drops?

These ear drops combine two medicinal ingredients — 2% acetic acid and 1% hydrocortisone — to treat infections of the outer ear (external otitis).

They are the compounded equivalent of Vosol HC, which has been discontinued in Canada. Our compounding pharmacy produces these drops because the commercially manufactured product is no longer available.

How Do They Work?

Acetic acid (a dilute form of vinegar at 2%) works as both an antibacterial and antifungal agent. It lowers the pH in the outer ear, creating an acidic environment hostile to infectious organisms.

Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces swelling and inflammation. Studies have found that the combination of acetic acid plus hydrocortisone is more effective in treating outer ear infections than acetic acid alone.

What are They Used For?

  • Swimmer's ear (otitis externa)
  • Outer ear infections caused by bacteria or fungi
  • Chronic suppurative otitis media

Side Effects

Due to the acidic nature of the drops, some patients may experience:

  • Irritation at the application site
  • Redness
  • Temporary pain or stinging

If side effects are severe or persistent, contact your physician or pharmacist.
