What are Dog Ear Infections?

Canine otitis externa is inflammation of a dog's outer ear canal. It may involve bacteria, yeast, inflammation, allergies, moisture, ear anatomy, or other underlying factors that the veterinarian assesses.

Signs that should be discussed with a veterinarian include:

  • Redness or swelling in the ear
  • Pain or soreness
  • Odor from the ear
  • Discharge
  • Excessive scratching or head shaking
  • Symptoms that return after previous treatment

Our Treatment

A common veterinarian-requested ear gel may include:

  • Enrofloxacin — an antibiotic
  • Ketoconazole — an antifungal
  • Triamcinolone — a corticosteroid used for inflammation

The veterinarian may request different ingredients based on exam findings, history, culture results, or prior response.

The poloxamer-based gel is liquid when cold and gels after application to the warmer ear surface. This helps the preparation remain in the ear canal after application.

Application Instructions

Use exactly as written on the veterinary prescription label. General handling points include:

  • Store the preparation as directed on the label
  • Shake or warm if the label or pharmacy gives that instruction
  • Apply the measured amount into the affected ear as prescribed
  • Prevent the applicator tip from touching contaminated surfaces
  • Wash hands after application
  • Contact the veterinarian if pain, swelling, head tilt, balance issues, hearing changes, or worsening symptoms occur

Why Testing May Matter

Dog ear infections may involve yeast, bacteria, mixed infections, resistant organisms, mites, allergies, or other conditions. Cytology or culture results can change which ingredients the veterinarian writes on the prescription.
