What is All-Purpose Nipple Ointment?

All-purpose nipple ointment (APNO) is a combination ointment containing three active components:

  • Mupirocin — an antibiotic to treat bacterial infection
  • Miconazole — an antifungal to treat yeast/thrush
  • Betamethasone — a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation

Alternative antifungals (clotrimazole, nystatin) or the addition of ibuprofen for pain may also be included based on your prescription.

What is it Used For?

This ointment treats sore and cracked nipples caused by:

  • Breastfeeding difficulties (poor latch, tongue tie)
  • Thrush (yeast infection)
  • Bacterial infection
  • Skin conditions (eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis)

The combination of antibiotic, antifungal, and corticosteroid addresses multiple causes of nipple pain simultaneously.

How to Use

  1. Apply a thin layer after each feeding
  2. The nipple should appear shiny but with no visible excess ointment
  3. The ointment generally does not need to be wiped off before the next feeding
  4. Continue use until nipples are pain-free, then gradually reduce over a week

Wash hands before and after each application.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon and usually occur at the beginning of treatment when skin is damaged:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Itching or soreness
  • Dry skin or mild burning
