What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil (known by the brand name Rogaine) was originally developed as a blood pressure medication. When an unintended side effect of hair growth was discovered in the 1970s, research began into its topical use for hair loss.

Today, topical minoxidil is used to treat male pattern baldness and hair loss (alopecia) in both men and women. Our compounding pharmacy makes a topical spray, most commonly in 2% or 5% concentrations.

How Does it Work?

Minoxidil works on the hair growth cycle in two key ways:

  • Shortens the resting phase (telogen) — pushes resting hair follicles back into the active growth phase
  • Prolongs the growth phase (anagen) — allows hair to grow for a longer period

It also increases hair follicle size and may work through potassium channel opening (via minoxidil sulfate).

Combination Formulas

To enhance effectiveness, minoxidil can be combined with other ingredients. Common combinations we compound include:

  • Melatonin / Minoxidil / Tretinoin
  • Finasteride / Minoxidil / D-Panthenol
  • Azelaic Acid / Finasteride / Minoxidil / Tretinoin
  • Azelaic Acid / Biotin / Finasteride / Melatonin / Minoxidil / Tea Tree Oil / Tretinoin

Side Effects

Possible side effects include:

  • Burning or irritation at application site
  • Unwanted hair growth on other body areas
  • Contact dermatitis or redness
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness (uncommon)
