Thyroid hormone can be compounded into capsules at strengths and combinations not available as commercial tablets. This includes a fixed combination of T4 (levothyroxine) and T3 (liothyronine) in one capsule, or T3 (liothyronine) on its own. Modified-release versions can be prepared so T3 is released more gradually.
Some patients need a precise dose between commercial strengths, a specific T4-to-T3 ratio, or a capsule free of a particular filler or dye. The prescriber sets the strengths, ratio, and release type, and arranges the blood-test monitoring that thyroid therapy needs.
