Empagliflozin

SGLT2 inhibitor for diabetes, heart failure, and kidney protection

Empagliflozin (Jardiance) lowers blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove extra sugar in the urine. It is also approved for heart failure and chronic kidney disease, even in patients without diabetes.

On days with vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or very low food intake, the medication is usually paused to avoid a serious complication called DKA. The pharmacist can give you a written sick-day plan.
Genital yeast infections are a known side effect. Tell the pharmacist or prescriber — they are usually treatable.
