What are Rectal Rockets?

Rectal rockets are specially shaped suppositories: tapered at the top for insertion and flared at the bottom so part of the suppository remains positioned near the external rectal area. This dosage form may be prescribed when the care plan needs both internal and external medication contact.

Active Ingredients

A common five-ingredient rectal rocket formula includes:

  • Misoprostol — not for use in pregnancy
  • Sucralfate
  • Hydrocortisone 1% or 2%
  • Lidocaine 1% or 2%
  • Nifedipine 0.2%, 0.3%, or 0.5%

The prescription determines the exact ingredients, strengths, quantity, and directions.

How to Use

Use exactly as written on the prescription label. Rectal rockets are often prescribed as one suppository at bedtime while lying down, but the label should guide the routine.

  • Wash hands before and after use
  • Insert as directed by the prescription label
  • Remain lying down if the instructions tell you to use it at bedtime or in a supine position
  • Ask the pharmacy if storage, handling, or positioning is unclear

Treatment Length

The treatment length depends on the condition and the prescriber's plan. Hemorrhoid prescriptions may be short, sometimes a few days. Anal fissure prescriptions are often longer, such as 4–7 days or the schedule written on the label.

Do not extend, repeat, or stop a course differently than prescribed without checking with the care team.

Side Effects and Storage

Possible concerns include local irritation, burning, itching, numbness, headache, dizziness, bleeding, worsening pain, or symptoms related to the prescribed ingredients. Contact the pharmacy or prescriber if symptoms worsen or if side effects are concerning.

Follow the storage directions on the label. Some suppositories may need refrigeration or protection from heat.

About Rectal Rockets

The flared bottom helps keep part of the suppository positioned near the external rectal area, while the tapered portion allows internal placement. This is why prescribers may choose it for conditions involving both areas.
No. Rectal rockets contain misoprostol, which cannot be used by pregnant women.
