What is Compounding?

Compounding is the practice of preparing a medication for an individual patient when a commercially available option is not appropriate or not available in the needed strength, dosage form, flavour, base, or ingredient profile.

At Taché Pharmacy, our compounding lab prepares medications in a range of forms: topical creams and gels, capsules, suppositories, sublingual drops, oral suspensions, lollipops, ear and eye drops, and other prescribed preparations.

Compounded prescription medications are available by prescription only. The prescriber determines the ingredients, strength, quantity, directions, and follow-up plan; the pharmacy prepares the prescription and counsels on use, storage, beyond-use dating, and refill timing.

What is Compounding?

Our Process

We no longer mix by hand. Our compounding lab uses electric Unguator mixing machines — sealed-jar mixers that replace the traditional mortar and pestle. Each batch is prepared inside a single-use jar with a disposable sealing disc, and the machine's propeller blends the ingredients inside that sealed container.

Because the mixing cycle is timed and repeatable, each batch follows the selected mixing speed and duration. That gives the pharmacy a controlled process for preparations that are appropriate for this equipment.

We run multiple Unguator machines in parallel. That means we can prepare several compounds at once without sharing equipment between preparations, which helps reduce the risk of cross-contamination and shortens turnaround when you come to pick up a refill.

HOW WE HELP

Practical Support Around the Prescription

Compounding is not just the preparation. It also includes clarifying prescription details, counselling on use, and helping patients plan refills.

Prescription-Specific Preparations

Creams, capsules, suppositories, sublingual drops, lollipops, and liquid preparations can be made in the strength and directions selected by the prescriber.

Ingredient and Base Review

When allergies, intolerances, texture, flavour, or inactive ingredients matter, we can review practical options with the patient and prescriber.

Refill Planning

Compounded prescriptions may have beyond-use dates, storage requirements, and preparation time. We help patients plan refills before they run out.

Pickup and Delivery

Patients can ask about pickup, delivery, storage requirements, and whether a preparation needs special handling during transport.

Prescriber Clarification

If a formulation detail is missing or unclear, we can contact the prescriber before the preparation is made.

Counselling and Follow-Up

We explain use, storage, beyond-use dating, refill timing, and what questions should go back to the prescriber.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Have Questions?
Compounding Questions

Compounded prescription medications are available by prescription only. Some non-prescription preparations may not require a prescription, but prescription ingredients and prescription strengths require direction from a Canadian prescriber.
Timing depends on the preparation, ingredients, dosage form, checks required, and current lab workload. The pharmacy can give you a preparation estimate when the prescription is received or reviewed.
Sometimes. It depends on whether the active ingredient can be sourced, whether the preparation is appropriate to compound, and whether the prescriber provides the required prescription details.
Yes, when prescribed by a veterinarian. Veterinary preparations may involve flavoured liquids, capsules, transdermal gels, or other dosage forms selected by the veterinarian.
Coverage depends on the insurance plan, ingredient, dosage form, and prescription details. We can submit the claim or help you understand what information your insurer may request.
Often, yes. Bring the prescription and tell us about dyes, preservatives, fillers, flavours, bases, or other inactive ingredients that have caused problems so the options can be reviewed.
The prescription should include the active ingredients, strength, dosage form, quantity, directions, patient information, prescriber details, and any base, flavour, packaging, or allergy requirements.
